Becoming Still

Before I understood the artist I was, I think I was already painting the person I was becoming.

This was one of my earliest pieces. I was still experimenting, still discovering what my hands could create when I allowed them to move without needing everything to make sense first. I did not begin with a perfectly formed vision. The figure emerged slowly through the layers — perhaps that is why the face feels as though it is still being revealed.

We often imagine becoming as a clear transformation, a single moment when the old version of us disappears and the new one confidently takes its place. Most of the time, it does not happen that way. We become in pieces: through every boundary we finally hold, every instinct we begin to trust, and every part of ourselves we stop changing to make other people comfortable.

The colors do not blend neatly. Marks overlap, interrupt, and move in different directions. Yet together they create someone whole. The closed eyes are not searching outside for an answer; they are allowing existence before there are words to explain it.

Not who we once were. Not yet everything we will be. Becoming.

About the print
An archival fine art reproduction of Patricia Graham’s original artwork, including the newly added gold details. Printed on archival matte fine art paper to preserve the layered turquoise, violet, green, pink, black, and gold of the current original.
