Rooted in Quiet

I used to think silence meant something was missing. Perhaps it was because I had become so accustomed to noise — the thoughts, expectations, other people’s voices, and the constant feeling that I needed to explain myself. Quiet left me alone with everything I had been too busy to hear.

But the longer I stayed there, the more I understood that silence was not empty. It was where I returned to myself.

Her eyes are closed not because she has given up, but because she no longer needs the outside world to confirm what she already knows. Everything around her still moves, yet something within her remains steady. This was one of my earliest pieces, and looking back I can see that I was already learning that strength does not always announce itself.

Sometimes strength looks like stillness. Sometimes it is choosing not to react. Sometimes it is sitting quietly long enough to recognize which thoughts belong to you and which ones were placed there by someone else.

Roots do not grow where everyone can see them. They form beneath the surface, in darkness and silence, creating the strength that will eventually hold everything above them.
